Why Do I Keep My Bikes So Clean?

Simple answer: clean bikes are Faster! Seriously they are, go ahead and factcheck me.

What you will find is the improvement in aerodynamics and slightly better rolling resistance is quite significant at pro peloton and velodrome speeds. A lot less so for most of us out for a weekend ride. However even a 3 to 5% improvement in speed / efficiency is meaningful once you start getting above 15 MPH and riding for a few hours or more.

So yes, I take the time to keep my bikes clean. There are several other benefits. During even a simple spray & wipe down with a bike cleaner (hack: generic window spray cleaner works great) I run through the ABC preflight check. This gives me a great opportunity to really inspect all aspects of the bike.

Are the tires bulging, wearing thin, do I see cuts in the sidewalls? Any of which can make for an unpleasant future ride.

I always look over the drivetrain very closely. A worn chain can add up to an expensive complete drivetrain replacement very quickly. And way before that is will rob you of speed and start shifting poorly.

Plus a really clean bike just looks great. You can almost hear them shouting – let’s go for a ride!

My Trek Project One Red Rocket. All cleaned up and ready to roll.
