Yes, I Participate in and Support National Senior Games

And I highly recommend that those of you who can, do become involved in some sort of sport and/or game in your local area. Even if you are not yet a ‘senior’ there is no better time than now to start training for the rest and best of your life. As I discussed in the Four Horsemen post, Dr. Peter Attia makes a great case for all of us to get active as early in our adult lives as possible and stay active. Meaning don’t stop until you are physically and/or mentally unable to participate in a sport, game, physical activity as simple as walking briskly.

To that end I call your attention to the Senior Games, available in a State or local community near you. Check out https://nsga.com for more information on the sports, games, activities included in the State and National events. The games include far more ‘fun’ activities than one typically finds in the Olympics or other competitions. They include bowling, disc golf, gold, pickleball (of course), even Tai Chi. Several team sports well. To make it even more interesting some of the sports allow one to compete at the National Championships as a walk-on.

Do check out some of the amazing athletes. I hesitate to call them ‘senior’ athletes lest one think they are not fit, not competitive, or aren’t ‘real’ athletes. As a senior athlete myself I find it a bit offensive when medical doctors do not take me seriously during exams for sport related injuries. Worse, some of them want to put me on observation and/or stimulants to get my heart-rate up. As one put it, “when I saw your heart rate of 48 BPM I thought you were either suffering from an enlarged heart or other medical condition. Or you were some kind of cyclists / long-distance runner.”

Thank goodness they took the time to do a visual observation before going nutso about additional tests.

So my ask of you today, please find a sport, game, or other physical activity that gets you moving a few times and ideally more than 150 minutes a week. The sooner you start enjoying a healthier lifestyle to more likely you will also enjoy a better quality of life. See Intensity post.
